It feels like every day we hear of another instance of a landlord taking advantage of a tenant. Upon first glance, it may appear that landlords have the upper hand when it comes to these negotiations and, unfortunately, many landlords, in an effort to make more money, take advantage of their tenants and try to bully or bribe them into accepting undesirable or illegal conditions.
This appears to be the case for tenants of a building in the Bronx who claim their landlord is neglecting his duties to maintain their homes. According to a city councilman, the landlord is assuming that tenants are not aware of their rights and thus can be taken advantage of.
Fortunately, the residents in this instance are starting to fight back against the deplorable conditions. According to one tenant, there is often no heat, making nights unbearable. In another instance, workers cut a hole to fix a gas leak, but left the hole, exposing a tenant to rats that entered her apartment. She states that she was then offered a buyout, which she refused. Additional complaints include broken mailboxes, rental overcharges, no intercom and rat infestations.
As the councilman stressed, it is vitally important for all tenants to have a full understanding of their rights and the responsibilities of landlords with regards to their property. Do not let a landlord bully you or try to propose a change that is unsatisfactory. If you find yourself in such a situation, you may want to get more information about your rights in landlord/tenant disputes to try to find a satisfactory resolution.
